Roy was born in Leeds in 1945 and is proud of his Yorkshire heritage although he was brought up in the south of England. He had the finest education at London Oratory school from 1956-1962 after which he joined Barclays Bank and was sent to Lavender Hill to start his career (no, not as part of the Mob!).

In 1988 he decided that 26 years was enough and left to work in training and development consultancy on a freelance basis. This opened many doors including becoming one of the first 12 assessors for Investors In People. This in itself widened the openings into NVQ assessing over several disciplines including Customer Service and Management.

In 2000 Roy received bad news that he had Prostate Cancer at the young age of 55. Having decided to stay positive and tackle it, he had surgery and all was well until 2008 when his PSA score doubled even though he had no prostate. Doctors recommended a course of 37 radiotherapy sessions in Guildford and thankfully, 25 years on, that resolved the issue, if not causing other problems to which he has adapted his life. This diagnosis led him into trying to support men about the disease and he started a support group in Woking in 2003 and made himself available to talk to men across the UK about their issues. In 2018 Roy was approached and asked if he could provide prostate cancer testing. He said yes and contacted an organisation already doing this who helped him to get started.

He did this with the help of our lovely long-standing member, Sue Carr. Eventually, Roy met up with Roger and Cancer Testing South mushroomed into a strong and effective testing organisation. Unfortunately, Roy had to resign as a Trustee in 2024 to devote all his time to looking after his sick wife. The other Trustees kindly agreed to appoint him Honorary President. However, he has now been approached to act as a Director of Cancer Testing Services CIC on purely a supportive and advisory role that fits in with his daily caring role. The other Directors have kindly agreed that he can also continue to be Honorary President of the new company for which he is very honoured. Roy will continue to be passionate about promoting awareness and the value of getting men tested, and in particular, help them to take ownership of their prostate health and alleviating their ignorance of the importance of knowing the numbers concerned with their PSA tests.
